Congresswoman Virginia Foxx and opponent Billy Kennedy are running for U.S. House of Representatives.

Foxx said her top priority in office will be to reduce federal government spending in order to stop increased debt, while Kennedy said he will focus on jobs and the unemployment rate.

Foxx felt the government should not have a large role in education.

Kennedy said the government has assisted many students in attending college.

“A lot of students have been able to go to college on national direct student loans and basic educational opportunity student grants,” he said. “Give every child an equal opportunity and affordable access to education in this country because education is the best way out of this economic mess, and we need to make sure we move forward and allow students to do that and not just a wealthy few.”

Billy Winkler III, Vince Gable, Lowell Thomas, David Blust, Winston Kinsey and Nathan Miller are running for Watauga County Commissioner.

While candidates agreed on most topics, each had their own top priority in mind.

The last candidates to speak were those running for N.C. Senate and House.

N.C. Senate candidates include Steve Goss and Dan Soucek.

Cullie Tarleton and Jonathan Jordan are running for N.C. House.

Each candidate agreed jobs are a top priority. When asked about what they would be willing to cut in order to balance the budget, however, the candidates disagreed.

“Band-aids will not work,” Goss said. “We will be cutting across the board, but it will have to be surgical in nature and make sure we’re doing it in a way that people understand it’s a sense of fairness.”
